Recorded and mixed by veteran Raleigh engineer Greg Elkins over the course of two years, Win Some, Lose Some reckons with love, loss, labor, and political disillusionment. "Earnest, Scared, Stupid," the first single from the record, sees the band grappling with institutional failure through the dynamic, confrontational indie rock they charted in their 2023 debut, No Growth, and expounded on throughout the eight songs on Win Some, Lose Some.

Long Relief was started by four friends in Raleigh, North Carolina in 2021, inspired by songwriters like John K. Samson and Sharon Van Etten, North Carolina acts like Superchunk, Finger, and Archers of Loaf, and the perspective of writers like Jane McAlevey, Rashid Khalidi, and Haruki Murakami. After releasing their debut EP No Growth in 2022, the band — guitarist and vocalist Paul Blest, guitarist Chris Carr, bassist Jeremiah Sloop, and drummer Greg Hughes — embarked on a run of shows throughout the Southeast with stops at the Fest in Gainesville, Florida, and their hometown Hopscotch Music Festival.
